The Christmas holiday season may be fast approaching, but us poor folks don't have time to think about such things at the moment. We are still busy cutting peat to keep us warm and to fuel the cooking stove through the winter months ahead . . .

Crofters 1

And the livestock need to be fattened up to make sure they produce plenty of meat and healthy offspring in the coming year

Crofters 2

But at least we have a well-stocked pantry to see us through.

Crofters 3

While we were out foraging I spotted a handsome fir tree which would sit very nicely in the front garden with some fairy lights to brighten our surroundings during Christmas and New Year. So while I was busy preparing a succulent haggis with truffles and cranberry sauce I sent my good lady out to cut it down ready to be transported back to base next day.

On reflection, I'm not sure if the old dear is quite up to the job. Maybe I should go and lend a hand. But then again, I wouldn't want to be too quick to make her feel inadequate in any way.

I'd better just give it another day or two.

Ah, yes, the carollers. Still working on that one.

You'll note that over here we have two "l"s in carollers. You have only one. And in the Bahamas they have Noël atoll.

Atoll

(Always useful to be able to drop that into a casual conversation.)

@graeme-ogg

I have always loved and been fascinated by atolls. An island in the sea with its own sea. Noël atoll is certainly apropos for this time of year.

And, in the same sea that boasts the Seychelles Islands, the Indian Ocean, lies Christmas Island, a territory of Australia. Let's visit all of the above!

Nice to see that you haven't lost your true Christmas spirit Graeme.  Are you going with the 20 gauge shotgun again this year or upgrading to the 12 gauge  for caroLLer dispersal?

The Bahamians must be a bit dim; all they have to do is pump out the water stagnating inside and voila they would multiply their available land many times over.  I may write them a letter.

Fingers crossed that I wasn't wasting my time there and that you actually got the "no L at all" bit. Of course you did. How could I ever doubt you.

As for this year's response to the eternal carol problem, you'll just have to wait a little longer.

Graeme; After viewing your lovely home I had a vision which I have made a reality.  You will be no doubt pleased to know that for Christmas this year my gift to you and the Missus is......wait for the drum roll.....indoor plumbing!  I have contracted "Crappers And Troughs Unlimited" to attend on December 27th for the install.  That way you and Mama won't have to wait for the first snowfall to have your annual bath rolling about on the front lawn......I sense passion pending for you my friend!

You are are a good-hearted soul and undoubtedly mean well, but my lady wife and I have always sternly resisted any modern "conveniences" like indoor plumbing, central heating and draught-proofing on the grounds that they could weaken our innate hardiness and natural resistance and make us prone to the many ills that plague those who adopt a "soft" lifestyle.

You also need to be aware that as winter hardens its grip we do tend to become a little feral in our quest for sustenance, so any tradespersons approaching the premises at this time of year are liable to be killed and eaten. Do Crappers And Troughs Unlimited really want to try their luck? They would be plumb loco.

Sounds good. I presume those three functions are incorporated into one combined freestanding unit? An excellent space-saving idea. Please go ahead.
