The 1936 Dodge was a good-looking sedan even if $640 was a bit pricey back then ! I am happy to have a 1/25 Liberty Classics diecast of the 4-door convertible. Here the actual 1:1 sedan is obviously the favorite ride of actress and robot Claudette Colbert, who is apparently screwing her robot head back on to inform us all of the benefits of this Dodge automobile !

Cool ad. The Dodge appeared quite similar to the Plymouth.

She's a gal who has her head screwed on straight, as she purchased an attractive and economical Dodge sedan. And she's not the only one who appreciates Dodge automobiles !

I feel that the thirties was a high point in automotive design.

Really cool old ads. $640 for a 36 Dodge. My goodness, that's the price of a medium-grade cell phone today. (I'd rather have the Dodge!)

Cool ad. The Dodge appeared quite similar to the Plymouth.

Although they appeared similar there were many differences...

what were the differences bewteen the 1936 plymouth 2-door base model and the 1936 2-door base model dodge?

As per AI...
In 1936, the Plymouth P1 Business Line and the Dodge D2 Series were distinct models despite sharing the same Chrysler corporate parentage. While they shared some mechanical similarities, the Dodge was positioned as a step up in size, power, and prestige from the base Plymouth.

Key Technical Differences
The most significant differences between the 1936 base 2-door models (Business Coupes) were in the chassis length and engine displacement.

Feature 1936 Plymouth P1 (Base) 1936 Dodge D2 (Standard)
Wheelbase 113 inches 116 inches
Engine 201.3 cu in Flathead Straight-Six 217.8 cu in Flathead Straight-Six
Horsepower ~82 hp ~87 hp
Roof Construction Fabric roof insert All-steel roof (steel insert)

Exterior and Styling
  • Chassis and Body: The Dodge was physically longer by 3 inches. While the body shells were similar, the Dodge used its extra length to move the rear axle back, creating a more elongated profile.
  • Front End: The Dodge D2 featured a longer hood and body-colored "Air-Styled" headlamps. The grille design differed, with the Dodge having four chrome horizontal bars on each side of the grille.
  • Trimmings: As the premium model, the Dodge typically included more exterior brightwork and chrome.

Interior and Equipment
  • Dashboard: The Plymouth P1 dashboard was more basic, while the Dodge D2 featured a revised instrument panel with recessed knobs and flush-fitting gauges for improved safety and aesthetics.
  • Upholstery: Dodge models often used higher-quality mohair or plush fabrics compared to the standard cloth in the base Plymouth.
  • Mechanical Refinements: The Dodge D2 introduced "silent front spring shackles" and a hypoid rear axle, which allowed for a flatter floor in the rear.

The "D3" and "D4" Exception
In Canada and some export markets, Dodge sold "Junior" models (D3 and D4) that were essentially 1936 Plymouths with Dodge grilles and trim. These cars used the shorter 113-inch Plymouth wheelbase and the smaller 201 cu in engine.

Interesting that $640 adjusted for inflation in 2026 is only $15,046.

Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
