Only last year did I learn that Cher's mother was Georgia Holt, but I've known about WW II Japanese soldiers remaining in hiding on Pacific islands decades after the war ended, from watching an episode of Gilligan's Island  more than 40 years ago. 

Clearly many, if not all, of that show's premises required a suspension in reality (dessert television, if you will... hence the name, "Minnow," but that's another story ) but after watching the Japanese soldier episode I thought, "No way!" 

My research (from books back then, remember books? ) quickly proved otherwise.  Can you imagine hiding out, in vain, for almost 3 decades? 😬 😬 😬
