I'm not especially pleased with this 'modern' Amazon approach. It certainly cuts down on shoplifting however.

I can't believe I haven't heard about this.   This is major, but the media is not on it.  Hmmm . . .

Amazon has two concepts, which are not concepts, but realities.  One is Amazon Go where you can shop like a Circle K. and Amazon Fresh where you shop as a grocery store.

If you thought that self-checkouts and home delivery were the coming things that eliminate jobs, here's another nail in the coffin of retail employment.

No clerks, no general manager, no assistant manager, no produce and other category manager, no checkout clerks, no cash registers to service, no secret security.  It will keep stockboys busy.

There are now 29 Amazon Go stores and 11 Amazon Fresh stores.  Amazon plans thousands more locations.

This is 60s automat vending taken to a much higher level.

I wonder how you do returns?  Common issues like "wrong size" or "wrong product" lead to a return to customer service.  How do you do this in this kind of store?  I am sure Amazon will get there but it also looks like a very limited selection.  Also, how good are the prices?  Amazon has a reputation of eliminating price advantage once they have hooked you on the path dependence.

Alan, a study has been done comparing Amazon's pricing to traditional stores.  The prices are either the same or less in many cases much less.   They don't have a staff to please or pay salary and benefits to.  That savings is passed on to the consumer.  And in doing so Amazon probably makes more money than it would with a traditional business.

The hurdle is having the upfront money to purchase the equipment and the time to amortize it.

To make a return, access the app on your phone, receive a code from Amazon and take the item to a nearby storage locker/center, enter the code, deposit the item and receive instant credit.
