Yes, between that and credit cards it's so easy to get a terrible shock with the January statement. Model car purchases don't count of course.......
Amazon has amassed way too much power over our economy and lifestyle. It sucks us in with attractive terms like "free shipping", and pay as you go, free returns and expedited shipping. All of these items cause prices to be raised dramatically and many items to be discontinued.
The future of retail is changing to where we eventually will see more huge warehouses where one can see, touch and smell products, but not buy them. A purchase will require a computer and Amazon now controls about a third of the cloud market where we do our shopping/computing.
Should it decide to drop the hammer on its customers (it already is attempting to do so on its vendors) a disaster would certainly occur. Years ago Amazon would have been suspiciously eyed as a potential monopoly. It should be so now too and regulated before it gets too far out of hand.

I find this generational "push out of the way" for these elderly folks very disrespectful and arrogant. Some of the latest generation hold such folks in contempt because they are too "dim" to get it or aren't "willing to change with the times". They can't appreciate that the emergence of the computer age and its increasingly fast development basically rolled over and past some elderly people; especially those who never had to use it in their professional lives.

I was being frank with my comments JB but that ain't my name. All that aside, the recliner at the pond sounds good! Lol.
Amen to all of that. All these big online outfils are getting more and more like totalitarian states.
My main gripes these days are:
1. Amazon is making more and more categories of popular products "Prime only". I don't buy enough to make the annual fee worthwhile (and I don't want or need the free videos or whatever that goes with it) so more and more purchases are ruled out on Amazon.
2. Even if I do want to buy from them, from the middle of January Amazon will no longer accept a Visa credit card for purchases (in the UK at least), claiming that the Visa charges are too high. They will only take my debit card which of course doesn't offer the same kind of money-back guarantee as a credit card. So unless there is enough of an outcry to change their mind, that's the end of Amazon for me -and hopefully they will lose a lot of other Visa users. Serve them right.
3. I'm not exactly a hardcore reactionary when it comes to modern technology, but I am happy enough just using a "dumb" cellphone for calls and texts. It doesn't do apps or read QR codes or make instant payments with one wave of the hand, and that is making things more and more inconvenient because all sorts of companies and organisations just take it for granted that your phone can do all these things and if it can't, the alternatives are time-consuming.
Oh, and if you want to tell me I should bite the bullet it and buy a smart phone, I can give you bank details where you can send your financial contribution. Thank you in advance.
Goodness, I never knew I had such reserves of pent-up anger and frustration in my system. But how very satisfying to have a bit of a rant, especially at this time of year when I am gearing up for my annual "Bah! Humbug!" routine.

As a person who made the decision never to own a cell phone on retirement years ago, I'm delighted to read all these comments. My job required me to be on the phone for about 1/3 of each business day. Freedom required me to refuse to carry a phone. I took up travel on retirement visiting more than 80 countries in the last 25 years. I needed a phone only twice, both times at airports and managed to borrow one in each instance.
Life should not be tied to other people's agendas.
At our age my wife and I seem to be visiting more and more doctors each year. We both carry flip phones when we leave the house but only have them in the event of an emergency. Sitting in waiting rooms frequently there is never a time when everyone there isn't on their smart phone. What are they doing? It absolutely amazes me that people are so willing to submit to a gadget and give up being a part of society. Oh well, back to being grumpy
