1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe Shatters American Car Auction Record
A 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe — chassis CSX2300 — just sold for an extraordinary $42.9 million at Gooding & Christie’s Pebble Beach auction, setting a new all-time record for the most expensive American car ever sold at public auction Motor1.com+1. The sale far exceeded its pre-sale estimate of around $25 million autoevolution.
Why This Car Is So Special
CSX2300 was the third of only six original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes ever built. Designed by Peter Brock, it addressed the Cobra roadster’s aerodynamic shortcomings on long straights by adding a closed roof, long fastback profile, and a Kamm tail. This transformed the Cobra into a legitimate high-speed challenger to Ferrari’s 250 GTO TheGentlemanRacer.com.
Only one of the six was owned by Carroll Shelby himself, and CSX2300 was part of the program he launched to beat Ferrari on the track. It competed in the 1964 Tour de France Automobile and helped Shelby American win the 1965 FIA GT Manufacturers’ Championship TheGentlemanRacer.com+1.

What got me in the article, was the mention of European car sales and in particular a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé. Just add one hundred million dollars to the Daytona's selling price!! The Uhlenhaut sold in 2022 for $142.9 million dollars!!
Been there, done that.A weak ago I visited the Simeone Foundation in Philadelphia, here is another one of the 6 original:

Man, that's great. I love the look of the coupe. I wish one of the mints would have given us one instead of so many standard Cobras. Or anybody for that matter.

Exoto did about a hundred of them in exquisite detail in 1/18th scale. I exaggerate the numbers but Tony K. did a remarkable number of them in many configurations in which they raced over the years.
This one I had signed by Shelby then driver, Dan Gurney:
@perrone1 absolutely stunning Tony, I guess I should have referenced, "in 1/24 scale" lol.🥴
Glad you brought this up Chav; I almost forgot about Shelby Cobra Roadster builders, Factory Five. They also build the replica Shelby Daytona Coupe. I saw one in Florida up close and it is to-die-for GORGEOUS!
