A beautiful car, a nice driveway and home and other than removing the emblem and lock on the deck, and lowering the car, it looks like the owner left the rest pretty much as it came from the factory. Given the number of chopped and channeled Merc's, I decided to do some edits that kept the car's basic proportions in balance. Again, I do them just to see what the results show.
As found:
Shaved the rear bumper, door lock and the gas filler door:
Slimmed the rear bumper and removed the guard, shaved the side trim:
Gave it a significant top chop, which did not help the car's proportions:
Sectioned the body to improve the car's proportions:
Did any of my efforts improve the car's presentation, in your opinion?
Enjoy!
Pic #3 for me please. I need headroom and, quite frankly, the '49 Merc looks good this way, to my eye.
When I was sixteen, I owned a 50 Mercury coupe which I customized in 1956-59. The customizing consisted of shaving the hood, door handles and deck lid , rounding the corners of the hood and having 144 louvers cut into the hood, frenched headlight and 51 Buick tail lights.54 Chevy grill and parking lights with extra teeth inserted, shortened the gas filler pipe and eliminated the gas door on the left rear fender and put on full length lake pipes. In 1959 I was able to find a 371CI J2 Old's engine and transmission which drastically improved the performance. I say all of this to let you know that I am not totally opposed to customizing but today I lean towards retaining more of a car's original features so as not to take away it's personality. As found but I do respect your changes as it tells me that you are truly a car guy with your suggested changes all of which are old school. I seriously doubt that most people under the age of forty would understand the terms shaving, sectioning, chopping, etc.
@bob-jackman Your Merc sounds like it would have been a very cool looking custom Bob; what color did you paint it?
It was Candy Apple Red until some kid threw a raw egg at it, when the paint was only a few days old, and the acid immediately started to take the paint off. I never caught the kid and only had liability insurance and couldn't afford to have it painted again. If you know anything about metallic paint, it's impossible to match...I know we tried.
@bob-jackman Such a shame....you must have been livid. What a moronic thing to do....jealousy I guess.
