I've heard of "taking the plunge" but that's ridiculous! I understand why the parents didn't attend.
Actually, they did. In fact they arrived early, eager to get into the swing of things. Unfortunately they had had very little contact with modern technology and a "parachute" was not a concept with which they were familiar.

Whoa, I would have trouble even being near to the cliff side ! Everyone did a fine job, however and it is quite a way to start a life together.

By the way, if anyone is interested, I can recommend a slim volume by one Charles M. Crank entitled "Freefall (skydiving without a parachute)". It was published posthumously but I believe his son, a lifelong devotee of the Darwin Awards, is planning to write a sequel.
