I grew up in a rural area with no department stores. But we had a Hobby Shop that catered to car model kit kids - and I was one of their steadier customers. Yes sir - FOND memories!
As we were growing up, true, full-service hobby shops were practically on every mile road. Also, there were still a few inside hardware stores, plus we had stand alone "big box" toy stores, also toy & hobby shops sections inside department stores AND hobby stores inside malls.... PLUS public slot car tracks!
As we got a little older, about 15 years before the internet, we'd spend ALL day "making the rounds," buying a little from each store, looking for bargains, sales, etc...
It really was an amazing time, NEVER to be duplicated... as antiquated now as kerosene lambs, hand-held calculators, or Blockbuster Video. 😔 😔 😔
Yes and back then a model cost $1.50. Today the same model is $40 unless you get it on sale at a Hobby Lobby. I still have a R/C-Model Hobby shop not far from my house, and they have a great inventory of model cars. I pick up a few here and there.
No true hobby shops in my neighborhood in the mid-fifties, but two stationary/toy stores across the avenue from each other carried a small selection models from Revell, Aurora and AMT. A few of us would go every week to see if the had something new.
Addition...and they also carried Monogram models.

From the early sixty, department stores and 5 and dime stores such as, Grants, TG&Y,Kmart,Woolco had a few car models. You had to go to Hobby shop to see a selection like the photo shows.
think I've posted it before and I'm no doubt boring u with my modelling history story but it is very much on topic. This hobby store has been trading here in Melbourne since 1947. I bought model kits from them at their current Flinders St store in the early 60s. About 2 years ago, after restarting kit building again after a 60 year break, I walked down those same stairs for the first time 60 odd years later to buy new kits and accessories. It felt surreal!
