George;  For what it's worth, I was feeling very much the same and to be honest it was getting me down to a point that I saw the need to change things.  We decided to move to a small lakeside town (16,000 population) set in a surrounding farming landscape in Alberta; about a 90 minute drive NNW from Calgary.  We have been here for 10 months now and it has been a life changer for us.  I haven't experienced one negative situation or interaction, there are no signs of social dysfunction and people are very much friendlier and have time to chat.  For this burned out old cop it has been wonderful; I have no regrets.

I love your story and solution to the issue discussed.  I'm about reaching the point where I'm going to get off social media and no longer listen to or watch any news.  It is extremely depressing.

@georgeschire After retiring from the police force in 2006 I was a security supervisor at the Provincial Legislature in British Columbia for 15 years; retiring for good one year ago.  What I saw and learned about politics at that level was, to be polite, a life lesson.  I was by no means politically naive when I started there; nonetheless I left very disillusioned and realized that if someone had told me the reality of life in that realm I would never have believed them.  IMHO there is a self-serving element present that is far more extensive than most people can appreciate.  I won't go on about it in this forum other than to say that I put far less stock in such things now, regardless of the party in power.  Call me a defeatist but....that's what evolved for me.
