Memory test! Can you remember the very first car you drove?
Mine was my Dad's 1961 Triumph Herald on the beach at Brean in Somerset. I was 15 or 16 and upset that I made a mess of gears, brakes, etc. Being a car nut I'd expected it to be easy...it wasn't!
1961 Willys CJ5 Jeep
My mom's 1966 Rambler American...
...From about age 14, I would sneak the keys out and take joy rides around the neighborhood. As we had parallel parking in Philly, I didn't always get it back into the same parking spot as she left it. God bless her, she never said a word.
PIC: My Dad's 1956 Ford Fairlane Town Sedan. I was about 15 years old.......

PIC: I bought a 1949 Plymouth when I was twelve years old.
I had saved some money and a guy in our neighborhood was selling it for $25. It looked a lot like this.

I paid him then had to go home to get my dad to drive it home. The look on Dad's face was priceless, "You bought what?" We got it home, I cleaned it up and Dad took me around the block to show me how the clutch worked, then let me drive it!
I was mowing lawns and washing cars on weekends to earn money. I spent a lot of time washing and (trying) to wax the Plymouth, pulling it in and out of the driveway and sneaking down the street when I could. One Saturday morning another man drove by, stopped and asked me if the car was for sale. He offered me $40. I took it on the spot.
Later that morning, my dad came out and asked where the Plymouth was. I told him I sold it. He said, "Did you give the man the title?" I didn't and I didn't know who he was. All I knew was the two twenties I had in my pocket. The buyer came by laetr that day to get the title.

Great story. Was this the start of a career?
Neighbor's 1955 Pontiac 4drsedan; 6 cyl. manual trans.
I was 13 years old. The neighbor kid and I were allowed to drive their family car up and down our country road. I remember it like it was yesterday.
1951 Allard J2
Just a few hundred yards around a factory parking lot. I was 14 at the time and remembered crunching a few gears despite a long lesson on clutches and gears before starting the car. I've had the sports car bug ever since.
It was! I spent 25 years in the car business before I was called to the ministry.
