It was a quick fix for the dealers to have a full-sized car to sell when the '62 Dodge was downsized
The '62 Custom 880 mated the front clip of the '61 Polara to the '62 Chrysler Newport body. Styling improved for '63 and again for '64 by which time it looked really good!

Pic: '62 Dodge did have a full-size the Custom 880, I owned one.

Pontiac down sized in '61
