Re continental kits...Back in the mid-fifties only the coolest guys who had the hottest chicks drove cars with continental kits...I suspect some here would not know this. Laughing Out Loud

For what my opinion is worth, the only guys I seem to remember putting Continental Kits on their cars were insecure.  They needed to garner attention to themselves and it was things like those hideous wart butts that got it for them.  I knew two of these guys in high school.

It is the diving platform that looks ugly on any car. The tire in the rear is not bad, extending the bumper or a carrier that sticks out detracts from the design of the car. No problem with the built-in ones.

I believe the accent wheel on the trunk lid of the Mark II and III stemmed from the Coronado kit (aka Coronado deck) which was a dealer installed accessory for the '52 - '54 Fords. A cleaner design for sure.

Both the '55 Ford and Mercury pictured are beautiful examples of period correct cars with continental kits. My vote goes with the Ford for its trend setting "Style-Tone" paint scheme.
