Aw, c'mon John! Give me a chance to breathe! These are getting too hard - stop. No; DON"T stop. Too dang much fun.
I love these 'off-years' comparisons. They're tough! I actually like both cars. Not the best year for either but I like them any way and wouldn't mind owning either one.
The Merc is sleek and clean. The B'ville is 'near iconic' cool.
Based, today, on just the wheels; it's Pontiac!
The 61 Pontiac has been a favorite of mine for years and the eight lugs wheels help that feeling. Why anyone would stick that outside mirror on the fender like that is hard to understand. I like the Mercury but the Pontiac wins this one for me.
Any easy win for the Pontiac for me.

Tougher choice than I thought. I really like the Mercury. But the Pontiac makes a statement, "It's a new era with a new focus. The sixties are going to be leaner, cleaner, and more elegant." I vote Pontiac.

That Mercury seems unappreciated when you look at the choices we made. I too chose the Pontiac but that Mercury is a decent car too and a close choice.
I like the Mercury very much but LOVE the Pontiac styling; it gets the nod.
Pontiac, but really like that Mercury too.
Easiest choice I’ve ever made, Pontiac!
Love them both, '61 Pontiac is my all time favorite and the Mercury is also an all time favorite. Choice too tough for me to make, TIE today.
This is a tough choice. There was a Mercury in my area exactly like that one, I used to see every year at the Dream Cruise, and it was awesome. The Pontiac is so incredible, my favorite year after the '59. Decisions, decisions, decisions... Umm, Pontiac today - don't ask me again though.

@jcarnutz John; I have noticed that the '61 Mercury styling is not particularly liked by many forum members, but it has always appealed to me. I recall building an AMT kit model of it as a kid and liking it ever since.
With the exception of the Chevy for 1961, I've never been a fan GM's styling for that year. So my voted goes to the MERCRUY, which in my opinion, though it is now again looking more like a Ford, is much cleaner looking than the Pontiac with that goofy looking curved up rear bumper.

The 1961 Mercury Monterey came with a variety of V8 engine options, including the standard 292 cubic inch V8, and more powerful optional engines like the 352 and 390 cubic inch V8s. The 390 V8, in particular, was a popular choice, offering up to 330 horsepower with a 4-barrel carburetor.

Though I think you're attempting to be cute, you're highlighted information above would have absolutely nothing to do with my choosing the Mercury. Now, if it didn't come with an engine, that would be a reason to not like the car.
