He was 79.    I never met anyone who didn't like Sanford & Son.   Demond was an accomplished actor, dancer, and drummer but he eventually left show business to become an ordained minister.    He will be missed; may he rest in peace.

OMG. I never missed the show. Demond's character, Lamont, was a perfect blend to Redd Foxx's (real name, John Elroy Sanford) crazy character. A minister since 1974, he was a really good person and a fine actor. R.I.P. Demond!

@perrone1  I thought Demond became a minister in 1984 (...in '74 he was still on S&S )  Also, I think Demond's actual first name was Grady, so there were lots of show tie-ins.

You may also know, Esther and Fred's buddies, Leroy & Skillet, released some of the filthiest, dirty, and foul-mouth comedy LPs in the 1960's & '70's.     The fact that Aunt Esther was so devout & religious was and S&S  inside gag.  😉

Man, bummer. I still watch the reruns, and I still get a good laugh out of the show. RIP Lamont.😥

That is sad he is gone. I didn't realize he was 79 years old .....I guess I just remember him being a young man on the show.

I just checked the net and you are 100% right. He married in 74 but was ordained in 84. And yes, again, his name was Grady Demond. Of course Grady was a character too as you well know but none so outlandish, in my view, as LaWanda Page as Aunt Esther! Her facial expressions were endless!
