I remember in the '60s, '70s, and '80s the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges and Restaurants were around in abundance.
The above retro-look is from ADS That Put AMERICA ON WHEELS by Erik Dregni & Karl Hagstrom Miller published by Motorbooks International in 1996.

I always wanted us to stay at these on our road trips when I was a child, but they were too rich for my parents' wallet.
That's okay, we stayed in some great Mom and Pop motels.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
Loved the clam strips too and the clam roll. Also had a great shake called the frostee. I have always wondered how they lost out in the restaurant and motel business when they had such dominant position.
Back in the early 50s while on a trip HJ was the restaurant of choice because they were always clean and the food was good and prices fair. 3 or 4 times a year we took a trip and the treat was ice cream for dessert at Ho Jo's.
Great nostalgia. Ho Jos was always a guarantee that you would get great food and a clean restaurant and excellent help. Thanks for the trip back George.
