remembering the family station wagon and what my boys called the "way back"

I remember riding in the rear facing seat in my aunts '57 Plymouth wagon.😊

My parents never owned a station wagon but my wife and I have owned four. We never had kids but we have owned lots of dogs over the years. When we owned the 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury III it had a rear facing third seat. When we would take our three big dogs to get Ice Cream they loved to jump into that third seat. When we got there I would put the back window down and they would wait for us to bring their treat. When we would get home I had to clean the drool off of the lift gate. A fun memory for me.

The closest we got to a wagon was a 1971 Hornet Sportabout in lime gold, like this without the wood.

It was a fun and functional car, really a 5 door hatch. And I own a 5 door hatch today.

....growing up in my neighborhood, I recall only two families that had station wagons.   But of course, I remember seeing them everywhere - especially at grocery stores!

you need to include the Ford Flex, which is the closet we came to a station wagon in the 2000's.

The first wagon my parents had was this 1961 Falcon wagon. Later when I could drive we had a dark blue 1968 Ford Country Squire with hide away headlights. Then we

 had a 1973 Ford wagon.

@grockwood   My father bought one of those in red.  Hated the car, but I liked the '63 Chevy wagon somewhat better, which he bought a year later.  It's funny, in a way, for I have become a fan of 'estate' cars and I have owned my MBz 300TE for twenty-three years.  Love it.

We never had a station wagon. Now I have an SUV...I guess that's the current version of a station wagon, which I like very much.

Dad had a new ‘63 Country Squire i Vintage Burgandy. After he remarried Fran worked McDonnell Douglas over here in Long Beach and she had a 64 Plymouth station wagon wasn’t very fancy, but it still was a wagon and I loved it.  my first car at 16 was a 61 country sedan which I got from a friend of my dad‘s at work. i’m sure I’ve mentioned over the years that I spent more time fixing it up than I did driving it and that’s how I taught myself mechanics. I wouldn’t trade those days for anything in the world

Even teenagers liked siting in the 3rd row seat.
