California Senate Bill S.B. 961, also known as the Speeding And Fatality Emergency Reduction on California. Streets (SAFER California Streets) bill, would require new cars and trucks sold in California, to have speed governors starting in 2027. The bill was introduced by San Francisco-based State Senator Scott Wiener.

The bill mandates the installation of “intelligent speed limiters” in new cars. These devices are designed to restrict the speed of vehicles to no more than 10 mph above the posted speed limit. The technology would utilize GPS and onboard camera data to determine the speed limits of specific roadways and ensure vehicles comply with them.

See more here. Scroll down to see detailed points of the new bill:

Or you can do like NYC where they installed speed cameras. If you exceed the posted speed limit like by 10 MPH the owner of the car receives a $50 speeding ticket in the mail. Ask me if it works.

This bill will go down in flames like most every other bill crafted before it to prevent Americans from killing themselves or each other.

Americans love the right to self-destruction & perdition, period.  Like total cigarette bans, gun laws, Prohibition, or even that wacky NY proposal to limit the size of beverage cups in a futile attempt to regulate sugar.

Bills & proposals such as these, in America, will always be perceived as nothing more than looney audacious attempts at Orwellian control.

Great! What could possibly go wrong???

I see the bad guys (and maybe a few good) hacking their car's software while the police are limited regarding how fast they can go.

This seems to be the first baby step in what will IMHO eventually evolve into a transportation system with self driving and speed controlled "cars".  The driver will just be the person sitting behind the wheel waiting for their pre-programmed destination to show up; likely while working on their computer, reading or resting.  Our traditional driver controlled experience will be looked upon as dangerous lunacy in the future and our crash carnage history will be looked at with stunned disbelief; much like we view car construction shortcomings, safety glass, collapsible steering columns and seat belt absences of not so many years ago.  People will of course buy into this concept for safety and ease of use reasons; our sense of driving freedom and sense of enjoyment cruising along, controlling the car at the whim of the driver will not be in anyone's mind as they never experienced the concept growing up.  The old saying of "stop the world, I wanna get off" comes to mind....lol.

I just looked him up to see an image of who he is. Hard to take him serious on this and, perhaps, ANY issue:

Wonder if Sen. Wiener owns a motor vehicle?    Regardless, this would be a case of increased cost passed on to consumers on account of big government running amok.
