...OK, what am I missing here?
- As John noted, once a Slinky was stretched TOO far it instantly became litter, but no one has ever repaired anything under the hood with a Slinky, have they? Me & my friends have executed MANY half - *** repairs but never used a Slinky - what good would it be.... unless you needed to rig up an exhaust. ????
- Am I reading too much into this joke?

Ah C'mon Chris, we repaired all sorts of under-the-hood problems with a Slinky. LOL! No, dear friend, you're not missing anything - the joke is the kid lost his Slinky and it was under the hood. It apparently wrapped around the water pump, causing problems. (Dam Kid!!)
