Here are a couple of postcard images that were taken in my hometown of Riverside, IL about twenty years apart ..... about 1936 and 1956. A number of automobiles were parked by the train station, but I would only know most cars from the '50's shot and only a couple from the '30's image.

Of course, other than the autos, the view today would be ....... exactly the same, lol ! Wink

That is Riverside's water tower, which was originally built after the town's design and founding in 1871. The very top suffered a fire in the early 20th century and a slightly higher iron top was part of the repair.

I really like the older picture the best. The old street lamps and cars just bring back a nice feeling. That water tower is also cool. Great postcards!

You have spoken about this town a number of times Mike; it seems to be one of those communities that fortunately hasn't changed too much over time.  It looks like a great place to retire.

The street plan and a number of houses, too, are from the late 19th Century. The street layout is from the architect who designed Central Park in N.Y. and parts of the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. The streets were crowned and paved to allow good drainage and operation of motorcars (and horse-drawn vehicles).

Nice photos. I always find it interesting looking at pictures of where I lived many years ago.

Here are 3 additional vintage pictures and one modern one of downtown Riverside (and cars) in about 1910 and also a modern day snap from the top of the water-tower. One vintage car resembles Vlad Sorokrat's vintage Cadillac 1/43 replica.

The modern image shows the street where they used to have the summer car show cruise nights until recently.

great photos Mike. Love the design effort that went into the water tower. Here in a largish Victorian rural town this dominates the main street. Its 99 years old, use now discontinued. Locals have a soft spot for it. Yeh well!

@michaeldetorrice

Do you know why they stopped the cruise nights?

Thanks ! That is quite a remarkable Victorian water tower stucture !

I missed a couple of car shows/cruise nights in Riverside when I was in the hospital with my stoke. I believe 2022 was the last cruise night and they had the bigger car show in that year, too.

There is still the "Route 66 Car Show" over a few blocks along Ogden Ave (old Rt.66) in next door Berwyn, IL every summer and that should still be on for this year.

@sizedoesmatter John just an FYI, perhaps something happened on my end, but that link resulted in a ton of wacko virus alerts, scam alerts, & warnings.  😬 😳 😬
