No, it wasn't a SUV yet, but certainly the predecessor of one. And folks, they were much more attractive, the same amount of room, and much more fun than the modern day version.

Guess it's personal opinion. I think most of the junk gimmicks they have on cars today are a waste of money and not needed. Playing on video games while driving takes away from the experience of a great trip enjoying the landscapes and having great conversations.

But it is missing AWD or 4WD.
When my kids were young and we would take a ride, I headed into the country and ask the kids "isn't it beautiful?" they would answer "TREES trees, see one, seen them all, boring". KIDS!! I think they still feel that way, only one out of 5 likes the country.

- I believe that was a Model T slogan that appeared in print & billboard ads. 😯 😶
- I'm not sure what you mean by "junk gimmicks?"
As the past owner of four station wagons, I loved wagons back in the day. My collection testifies to that fact today. Fast forward to today, we are now on our third SUV. While there are many more SUVs on the road today than there were station wagons back in their day, there is no comparison in my pick...SUV! Due to my advancing age, the SUV has three outstanding features the wagons didn't. First and foremost is the ease of entry and exit and visibility. Second the ease of loading cargo at a more convenient height. Thirdly, is performance and gas mileage. My current SUV has three hundred HP and averages 27 MPG in around town driving versus 210 HP and 12 MPG for the last wagon. While I love station wagon models in my collection, today's SUVs are simply fabulous performers in every category.
Gotta love today's SUV...the station wagon of old just can't compare. Our current DD is an SUV, our first...no more sedans for us. Agree with Bob regarding the SUV's outstanding features. As the past owner of four station wagons, I loved wagons back in the day. My collection testifies to that fact today. Bob, did you see my post - 10 days ago - about my son's new "self-charging hybrid" Subaru SUV? The basic range is 500-600 miles and re-gen. braking can add even more.
There's NO CORD, and it NEVER needs to be plugged in. The small "ICE" chargers the batteries on the fly. He drove across several States (600+ miles ) but used just $7 in gas. Yes, $7 .... now, that's amazing!
Hell - I thought I was doing well in my turbo-charged (c. 300 HP ) ATS coupe @ almost 35 MPG .... HA! HA! I'm not even in the same hemisphere! 🙄 😓 ☹️
"Gotta love today's SUV..."
Yes! I could never buy one - I still purchase 2-dr coupes & convertibles - but my wife will NEVER go back to cars; she's hooked on SUVs......for all the same reason you & Bob love them. 😀 😀 😀
@chris Chris, which model Subaru SUV are you talking about?

@sizedoesmatter The Forester "self-charging hybrid." It's the very first foreign car anyone in my family has ever purchased. He wanted to purchase a Domestic but sadly, there's nothing U.S. OEMs produce that can compete with that vehicle.
Tell me again why GM's market share continues to fall.... 😞 😞 😖

Good comments guys. I know SUV's are all the rage today, and I confess, I own one. All my original point was, that I guess I didn't relate, is that the Station Wagons of old were far more attractive and more comfortable than todays SUV's. Those Station Wagons were looked upon as being boring and not able to enjoy a nice sedan, HT, or convertible. Where as today, SUV's are the rage.

Sadly, IMO, most if not every SUV lacks a retractable rear window. 👎
