Ford vs. the Canadian Meteor differences

As many Forum members know, Ford Canada in addition to the regular Ford, also produced the Canadian Meteor. It started in 1949 I believe, was sold by Mercury dealers and utilized the standard full size Ford body. Differences through the years were mostly grille, tail light and trim oriented. Here are some examples: 1949 1951 1953 1955-'56 1957-'58 1959-'60 1961 * 1962-'63 (*1962-'63 changed to the intermediate Fairlane sized body) For 1962, as part of a revision of the Mercury range, the nameplate was adopted by the first intermediate-size Mercury sedan (with the Meteor again serving as a counterpart of the Fairlane). Following the 1963 model year, Mercury withdrew the model range. While the Meteor would become one of the shortest-lived Mercury nameplates, its role within the division would be revived for 1966 as the Mercury Comet grew into the intermediate segment (later becoming the Montego).

1949/50/51 Monarch

1952/53/54/55/56 Monarch

1957/59 Monarch (car was dropped in '58 and replaced by Edsel but resurrected the next year when Edsel bombed)

1960/61 Monarch (1961 was final year).

We have a lovely gold Mercury pick-up here that shows up at Cars & Coffee regularly.

Retired in Dunedin, Florida.

Mercury pickup truck history:

In 1946, Ford of Canada split its Ford and Lincoln/Mercury divisions into separate sales networks. Alongside the creation of the Monarch and Meteor sub-brands, Ford of Canada introduced trucks to the Mercury division. At the time, few rural communities offered both the Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealership networks, miniminizing model overlap and allowing for greater coverage for potential truck buyers. To differentiate Ford and Mercury trucks, Mercury added a brand-specific grille and slightly different exterior and interior trim.
