We have an enclosed yard, so when we're hosting our grand-dog we can let him out alone to do his business.

We attached a set of small bells on a string to the back door area so our pooch just nudges the bells to let us know he wants out.

@sizedoesmatter

I’ll bet he appreciates the privacy! Sometimes it’s best to “lick” when no one’s watching.

Our "famous dog"  Peanut (remember - he made the 2026 calendar ), finds us when he needs to go out, but if we're within earshot, he'll tap on the patio door.    He's a little character!  ❤️

In our house, prior to this one - same town, we had two dogs and three cats. Yes, they all got along famously. The dogs were, Shadow, my black lab/Doberman, from TX. She was about 70 pounds. Baron Von Tivoli was a huge pedigreed Great Dane well over 200 solid pounds. Shirl and I picked him out of a large litter, due to his size, prior to weening. As he grew bigger we built a decent sized barn next to our house on 4 acres. It was heated & cooled and totally fenced in.

Two large dogs left a good amount of waste. Once a week I dug an appropriate hole to bury it in. One day I was late digging a new hole and left it uncovered. For the next two days I was very concerned because I could not find any new business to have to handle. Then after looking at the last hole, I realized - they were doing their assignment in the hole!!

I covered it, dug a new one and, you guessed it, they backed up and used the toilet, ah, I mean hole, from then on.

It’s always interesting how everyday routines like letting the dog out can lead to little adventures or unexpected observations. Even simple tasks offer moments to notice details in your surroundings or enjoy a brief break from indoor activities. Dogs really make these moments more enjoyable and often remind us to slow down a bit.

What we do for our critters is amazing, even more amazing is how they train us. Lori and I spend half of our days catering to the whims of Barkley our yellow lab/ golden retriever mix and Domino our black/white cat. The dog was  from the shelter and the cat was a stray and the two are now best buds. Every morning I have to go out to the fenced in backyard to throw the ball for Barkley until he finally realizes he has to do his business. When we come in, Barkley goes to the kitchen pantry and sits down and waits for a treat. Domino seeing this now sits next to Barkley and has to have his treats as well.
