The 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe is an iconic French classic car celebrated as a masterpiece of Art Deco design and engineering. Known by its French nickname "Goutte d'Eau" (drop of water), it is highly sought after by collectors and has achieved multi-million dollar prices at auction.
Key Features and Specifications
- Coachwork: The stunning, aerodynamic "teardrop" body was custom-designed and hand-built by the Parisian coachbuilding firm Figoni et Falaschi. Each of the approximately 16 Teardrop Coupes produced had unique details, blending form and function with flowing lines, integrated headlights, and fully skirted wheels.
- Chassis and Engine: The car was built on the short-wheelbase (2.65m) T150-C-SS competition chassis, with "C" standing for Course (race) and "SS" for Super Sport. It housed a powerful 4.0-liter inline-six engine featuring hemispherical combustion chambers and triple carburetors, producing around 140 horsepower.
- Performance: Despite its luxurious appearance, the T150-C-SS was a capable performer. It featured a four-speed Wilson pre-selector gearbox, which allowed for quick, seamless gear changes, and independent front suspension, an advanced feature for its time. A showroom-stock Teardrop Coupe even finished third overall in the 1938 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
- Rarity and Value: Only a handful of T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupes were ever produced, making them among the most rare and valuable classic cars in the world. One specific example, chassis number 90107, sold for a record-breaking $13,425,000 at a Gooding & Company auction in March 2022, making it the most expensive French automobile ever sold at auction.

The Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe is widely regarded as a rolling sculpture, perfectly embodying the glamour and innovation of the 1930s French Art Deco era. It was a symbol of exclusivity, owned by the wealthy and prominent figures, and a frequent winner at prestigious concours events. stunning car. From my recollection available in 1/18, 1/24, 1/43. CMCs 1/18 I'd imagine would be the best detailed, I have a 1/43, but the Motor City 1/24s are the ones I'd love to add. Would need to mortgage the house to buy them now.
