1956 Talbot-Lago 2500 Sport Coupe

From Amazing Classic Cars...

1956 Talbot Lago 2500 Sport Coupe. JPG

As the final production model from one of France's most celebrated marques, this rare coupe represented both an ending and an ambitious last attempt at automotive greatness. The 2500 Sport Coupe, introduced in May 1955, featured a newly developed 2,491cc twin-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine producing 120 horsepower with twin Zenith carburetors.

Only 54 examples were ever built, making it exceptionally rare among European sports cars. An even more exclusive "Sport Spécial" variant offered aluminum doors, hood, and trunk lid, Borrani wheels, and high-lift camshafts, with just seven or eight examples produced.

Despite its advanced engineering and striking Facel-Métallon bodywork, the model proved difficult to sell due to its high price (reportedly twice that of a Jaguar XK140) and the engine's reputation for fragility. Financial difficulties ultimately forced Talbot-Lago's sale to Simca in 1959.

Wow; what a departure. I expect to look at a Talbot-Lago and see automotive styling by Feloni et Falaschi or Pourtout. Instead. I see am automobile with standard parts from a door, to a roof and windshield clear down to trunk, stylized rear fender and tail lights!

Way cool John  Thanks!

It is a cool looking car. I wonder how some of these interesting cars John has shown us would have sold in the US. If they had been reliable enough.

I'm always tinged with sadness when I see the end of a great marque. Must try and find more Talbot Lago models. Just 'something different' from me. I asked what is considered to be the greatest Talbot Lago car. Stupid subjective question I know, however this was the response: with a link to he Hemmings site.

The 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS "Goutte d’Eau" (Teardrop Coupé) styled by coachbuilder Figoni et Falaschi is widely considered the greatest and most iconic Talbot-Lago ever built.

The T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupé
  • Design: Featuring a dramatic Art Deco / Streamline Moderne aluminum "teardrop" fastback or notchback body by Giuseppe Figoni, it is often called one of the most beautiful cars ever designed. [1, 2]
  • Performance: Powered by a 4.0-liter inline-six engine with hemispherical combustion chambers (pushing around 140–175 horsepower) paired with a Wilson pre-selector gearbox. [1, 2]
  • Rarity & Value: Only about 10 to 12 Figoni et Falaschi teardrop coupes survive today. In March 2022, a 1937 Talbot-Lago T150 C-SS Teardrop Coupe sold for $13,425,000 USD, making it one of the most valuable French cars ever auctioned. [1]
  • Accolades: Specific chassis (such as chassis 90106 owned by the Peter Mullin Automotive Museum) won the inaugural The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award and Best of Show at major international concours events. [1, 2, 3]

Once again your 'something different' provides and an interesting and varied car enthusiasts distraction, thanks John.

@geoff-jowett Geoff, your last sentence says it all. Until recently, the vast majority of American car buyers bought into larger displacement engines. I say until recently as today's influence by the manufacturers are smaller size engines but with performance. I still haven't bought into that thinking but I feel the change is coming.
