The 1939 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio is a rare and valuable pre-war grand touring automobile with elegant, four-seat cabriolet coachwork, typically built by Gangloff. Its value typically ranges from approximately $635,000 to over $4 million USD, depending on specific condition, history, and whether it has the optional supercharged engine.

Vehicle Information and Specifications
The Type 57 Stelvio was named after the famed Stelvio Pass in the Eastern Alps and represented the final evolution of Bugatti's last production model before WWII.
  • Engine: A 3.3-liter (3,257 cc) twin-overhead camshaft inline-8 engine powered the Type 57.
  • Performance: In standard form, the engine produced around 135 bhp at 4500 rpm. The supercharged "C" variant (Type 57C) could produce over 215 horsepower, offering a significant performance improvement.
  • Chassis and Brakes: The final Series 3 models, produced from March 1938, featured significant refinements including the adoption of Lockheed hydraulic brakes and Allinquant telescopic shock absorbers.
  • Coachwork: Most Stelvios featured bespoke four-seat cabriolet coachwork by the firm Gangloff of Colmar, which often varied slightly from car to car.
  • Rarity: An estimated 80 Stelvios were produced in total across all production years (1933-1939).

Value and Collectibility
The value of a 1939 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio varies considerably based on provenance, originality, and restoration quality. Hagerty Valuation Tools indicates a price of around $635,000 for a model in good condition. Recent auction results for the more powerful Type 57C Stelvio show values ranging from around $577,000 to over $1.5 million for exceptional examples.

Where to Find a 1939 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio
These rare vintage automobiles are not typically found at local dealerships but are instead available through specialist classic car dealers or international collector car auctions.
  • A well-documented, professionally restored example of a 1939 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio by Gangloff (chassis 57741) has been offered by the specialist dealer Gullwing Motor Cars.
  • Cars often appear at major auction houses such as RM Sotheby's and Christie's, where specific vehicles with unique histories (e.g., used as a factory show car or driven by a works team driver) command premium prices.

What an awesome find John! What a magnificent touring car. Stelvio refers to the Stelvio Pass, a famous and challenging road in the Alps. Alfa Romeo has used this name in their current cars.

This Bugatti is just beautiful!
