Apparently, things were so hopeless, the accounts department had an average for details written upon their ledgers and to do the accounts, they would simply weigh the ledgers.

But please, someone, why "shoebox Fords" I've never heard this.

Charles the term seems to have evolved due to the shape of the cars. The prior Fords through 1948 were very much rounded while these were more squared off.

I haven't heard the 11th-hour design story. Anyone care to share?

I recall reading years ago that, largely due to Henry I's dogged resistance to change for many years preceding, Ford was in serious financial trouble and were challenged to compete styling-wise for '49.  I believe the 49 Mercury design was slated to be the new Ford but a decision was made to rush another design into production for the Ford instead.  This was why there were considerable quality control issues with the '49 Ford.

Hi John, I bought this book years ago and it is spectacular. Great stories about Billy Durante and Alfred P. Sloane, and there's an entire chapter on the Tudor story. I haven't the book with me to quote from it but it is pretty much as Jack has said. Though in my memory, the story is going on in 1946, '47. (They wouldn't permit me  posting an actual link)

@charles-rockett  Charles; I think the death of Henry Ford I in 1947 was a factor in the decision to change design in the 11th hour.

This is surely it, and with Henry II and Benson at the helm, things got back on track.
