Now how did I know what was coming???

...well, I have a true anecdote about "water in the carburetor."    

25 years ago, my wife called me in the morning and said her car - a 1997 Thunderbird 4.6 V8 - was making a funny engine noise.  I asked, "When did this start?"   she replied, "Almost right after I drove through a big puddle."    It had rain hard throughout the night but NOTHING she was telling me was making sense.    I drove down to investigate.   

The car ran fine but the engine was making a loud "pinging sound."        ?????  🤔 🤨 

LSS: Ford engineered these V8's with a VERY LOW air intake, subsequently, driving through heavy rain or large puddles could result in "water in the carburetor"  - so to speak. Naturally the engine was fuel injected.   I filed an insurance claim for "water ingestion"  and Allstate paid for a "long block"  engine rebuild on a 3-yr old car with 18K miles. 

The adjuster noted that this was NOT the first such claim for these Thunderbirds; furthermore, Allstate may take Ford to court to recoup their mounting losses.  Crazy, right? 🙄 😮

I can relate to your story.  I had a 1990 SuperCoupe that I drove slowly thru a flooded part of a road during a rainstorm.  It started running rough and tripped the check engine light.  I nursed it home and pulled out a soaked air filter.  Fortunately just drying out the intake and replacing the filter were enough to eventually smooth out the engine and turn off the check engine light.  This was around 1994 and the car had 40K miles on it.  Others were not so lucky and had to be towed with hydraulicly locked engines.

@pete-rovero Glad to hear yours didn't require a rebuild - small world - my wife's was black (gray interior ) too.    Like your pic, here's hers in the street "surrounded"  by some of my old cars at that time.   Too funny!    😀 😀 

LOL, over our decades together, this conversation is so like many my wife and I have had.  We've laughed often.

Me:   "Honey, where's the scissors?"

Wife: "In the kitchen." 

Me:   "Where in the kitchen?"

Wife:  "In the drawer."

Me:   (OMG) "What drawer?"

Wife:  "By the stove."

Me:    "Left or right side?"

Wife:  " Yeah."

Me:  (OMG!!) "Where are the ******* SCISSORS!?"

Wife:  "In the kitchen!"

Me:    😫 😫 😫 😫 😫 😫 😫 😫 😫

As I said, OMG, I can relate.  One funny one we shared some years back when our girls were still little went something like this when she called me at work at the bank. 

Me: Hello, this is George, can I help you? 

Her: (No hello back, just this)... Ole at Goodyear said the car needs new bearings.  The water came up through the drain and is flooding everything. 

Me: Bearings?  And what drain?  There are no drains on the car connected to the bearings. 

Her: I didn't say there was a drain on the car. 

Me: Then what does the car needing bearings have to do with a drain flooding? 

Her: Nothing.  You're confusing the two things. 

Me: Well you brought them up together, so how am I supposed to know what you're talking about. 

Her: I don't think this is difficult to follow. 

Me: Oh brother, so where are you now?  At Goodyear or dealing with the drain problem? 

Her: I told you I'm at Goodyear and that is when the repair guy called me and said the reason there is no flame, is because the igniter switch is bad. 

Me: Huh?  Flame?  Where is there an igniter switch on our car? 

Her: Come on...I'm talking about the stove repair guy! 

Me: I've got a customer waiting for me, I gotta go.

Oh yea, I totally know where you're coming from.  And hey, most of our conversations somehow end up this way.  I need to stop her, ask to start over and hopefully then we're both on the same train track together.  We've been married 51 plus years and I wouldn't trade my princess for the world.  Stories like these have provided us a million laughs.
