I have always been a huge fan of the '50 Ford design; it gets the nod.  I prefer the grille/parking lights of the '49 Mercury but this one is very nice looking as well.

In the day, definitely Ford. Today, if I were cruising in the shoebox, You might not notice me. But in that Merc, especially top flopped back - Oh Yeah Babe; I'm stylin' and profilin'!!

Good one today, again, Thanks John!

Easy for me, Mercury. When I was sixteen I bought a six year old Mercury coupe and customized it. I loved that car but sold it when I went into the service. The 49,50 and 51 Mercuries will always be the greatest IMO. The Ford is nice but up against the Mercury it doesn't stand a chance.

Quite different looking though from the same company. I do like both but like the Ford most.

A toss up for me.  Went with a tie.  Two of my favorites from 1950.

MERCURY!  I liked the '49 just a tad better, but the '50 was still the Cat's Pajama's for me and they still garner my full attention when I see one today.

With regard to the "Shoebox" Ford as some called them, I never cared for the way they were wide in the front fender/hood area and then narrow in the rear.  That's always looked odd to me.

Mercury please. The grill on the Ford & they looked too narrow for my taste. The '51 double bullet grill is acceptable to me though car still looks too narrow.

The '49 - '51 Mercury's are very nice but I still would have bought a Hudson in those years.

The Merc.  So classic.

Loving the clean and uncluttered lines of the Ford. I don't care for the Mercury grille. The Mercury has too much going on...like it's trying too hard.

Gents, thanks for your responses!

A choice between squarish and round, isn't it?  Always have liked the round, smooth look of the Mercs! Sculpture versus shoebox. I prefer sculpture.
