Beautiful automobiles and I am delighted to have replicas of each of these. Great '50's cars !
Excellent choices John! I've been going back and forth looking at these two beauties and I just can't decide. The Mercury has a more upscale look because of all the extra chrome and color breaks, but the Ford, in its simplicity, is a real head-turner. Gotta go with a tie today.
This "Which One?" is a case of the old flip-flop, meaning my vote would be different if these were '55's instead of '56's. For this '56 poll, hands down I vote for the FORD. But if it were '55's, I'd vote for the Mercury.
My reasoning is, I like the refinements to the '56 Ford grill and dashboard over the '55. And for Mercury, I don't like the subtle changes made to the grill on the '56 from the '55.

I oscillate back and forth but I currently like the year, 1956, over the previous year car for both makes. But now your curve ball, John. WOW; took some soul searching but I like the Ford better than the Merc. And here's the surprise to me, as I gave ample thought to it - it won by a large margin!
*I'd prefer both without their skirts but would keep them for special occasions like car shows, etc.
Ford all the way. Everything about the Ford is just right from the grill to the tail lights. The Mercury is nice but it looks contrived with it's busy grill and paint breaks. I like the Mercury but I love the Ford.
Ford. It's so pretty.

The Mercury looks like it has buck teeth. My vote FORD!
@bob-jackman I agree Bob...there's just no beating a Ford Fairlane HT in 1956; best looking car of its class. I actually prefer the less adorned/trimmed '55 Merc to the '56....but like both years.
50 years ago I would have said Ford, 25 years ago I would have said Mercury, today I say I love both a TIE!
The Mercury looks big and heavy compared to the Ford
