Nice comparison, both are excellent, but the Riviera is hands down the best for me. This is my favorite Riviera. My Aunt had a lot of fantastic cars over the years, but the one she had of the '66 Riv in light blue will be forever in my mind.

@jcarnutz I’m torn here but I’m going for the Olds’ out of nostalgia. Back in the hobby shop slot car track days I had a metal flake blue Toronado that I thought was about the coolest car on the track. Loved them then, still do. Gotta say though, I think the Riv’ is drop-dead gorgeous!
Neither at their very best in '66. But, to my eyes, the Riviera looks purposely styled for luxury where the Olds looks like it was built around its front wheel drive configuration and nothing else. Buick for me please.
Buick please, I never cared much for the styling of any year Toronado.
I voted for the smooth, elegant Riviera with RWD. The Toronado is also fabulous though.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
I'm going with the sentiments of both Tony & Geno. Buick for me.
An easy one, but for odd reasons.
My vote goes to the TORONADO because it was new and innovative car for Oldsmobile in 1966, that being the "Front Wheel Drive" thing. The other reason, is it holds sentimental value to me, as it was the car I took my Drivers Training class in. Imagine my surprise when I showed up at school and my teacher/instructor led us to the Toronado in the parking lot. I think my eyes actually popped forward out of their sockets like they do in the cartoons.
Now this shared, let me say that I've always thought the Toronado was one very UGLY CAR! It was totally different styling wise than what we had been used from Oldsmobile, General Motors overall and any other car from the Big Three automakers at the time.
As for the RIVIERA, to my eyes this was an extremely UGLY CAR! I'd loved the '63 (the best), '64, and '65 Riviera's and whatever this thing for '66 was, it wasn't the Riviera I loved. In my mind then and still today, as ugly as I think the Toronado is, the Riviera is uglier.

Maximum size outside, minimum inside. The Riviera is the better looking of this pairing.
They are both beautiful personal luxury automobiles from that time. They are both strong V-8 engines, although I would prefer the RWD set-up of the Buick.
When the 66 Riviera came out I couldn't get over it's smooth lines and purposeful design. While I like d the earlier Rivieras, the 66 was a beautiful example of understated elegance. Buick.
My father and I never agreed on anything, with the exception of the Toronado, so she gets my vote for nostalgia.
