Fascinating how much they resemble one another. Toss in the Monte Carlo too. In this choice (well done AGAIN, John) I voted Pontiac. They defined the personal luxury status quo for that age; the Grand Prix LJ was refined, handled above its expectations and looked like a high end luxury vehicle beyond its years. (J was standard trim level. SJ was Sports Trim and LJ was Luxury Trim Level)
Very close for me but Pontiac for it's dashboard which surrounds the driver.
Pontiac for me too. It looks the part much better.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
I prefer the styling of the Cordoba over the also attractive Grand Prix but like the Pontiac for its better interior, trim finish and build quality. I voted a tie this time.
How would you rank the Charger Daytona against the Cordoba and Grand Prix? Inquiring minds and all that rot, I say.
I find this period of U.S. automobile design fascinating as there is a move towards retrospective classicism at the same time as novelty modernisms. I would dearly love to have 1/43 models of either car - but a 1/1? Neither.
@perrone1 I always considered the original styling of the Cordoba to be that of a classy, almost elegant sport coupe (Note: does not include that cheesy velour interior...gotta be Ricardo's "Corinthian leather"...lol). I drove a new one just for one day back in the day and loved it's level of comfort and handling. Same goes for the Grand Prix of this era. The Charger Daytona seemed to be marketed as almost a muscle car, as evidenced by the 2-tone application, which IMHO it definitely was not; Chryco had better, smaller muscle car offerings. I thought the Daytona package looked a bit cheap compared to the elegant Cordoba. I much prefer the two versions offered for comparison today to the Charger Daytona. Lastly, I only ever liked the original Cordoba styling; when the nose was restyled it's look was ruined. A friend of mine had a new '78 with the velour interior and the 400 drive train...it was a lumbering, unattractive lump/gas hog and its QC was terrible.
I much prefer the two versions offered for comparison today to the Charger Daytona.
I much appreciate your answer and actually agree with you. My question was an ill-attempt at making sure you realized the two offered for comparison were the Grand Prix and the Charger. OK, I'm going to shut up and go mix a bourbon and diet Schweppes Tonic...........................
@perrone1 Oh....riiiight! I need more coffee, I missed the fact that it was a Charger but now that you mention it....lol. My bad! I prefer the trim of the Cordoba over the Charger, especially its tail lights.
Sooo...with my new realization that the comparison is actually between the GP and a Charger, not a Cordoba, my tie vote is deemed to be incorrect as the GP would win. My entire submissions on this comparison are now confirmed to be incorrect and almost irrelevant. My apologies to Mr. Bono and Ricardo Montalban....wherever he is.
Yes sir, so do I. Forget the coffee - go for the Bourbon! How about a nice amber + mellow Evan Williams White Label and a dash of 7-Up for you? Garnish with a lemon wedge.
@perrone1 It's only 7:51 here Tony.....maybe a shot of Bailey's in my coffee mug. I don't want to shock my long abused liver, which I've been very kind to in the last decade or so. Lol.
The Poncho and a six pack of Billy Beer thank you.
