You would think this might get down to. "Which rear end do you prefer?" If that were the case, I would say, "The '56." But, I'm drawn to the '55 for what it represents, a bold and daring new direction for Chrysler and the beginning of a lasting legacy of a gentleman's performance car and arguably the beginning of the personal luxury car segment. .

55 and I agree with John.

1956 brings the look to perfection, plus adds upgraded transmission and HP. My favorite 1950s American car.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
As pretty as the rear of the '56 is, to my eye, it doesn't quite go with the front end. In particular, the vertical rear-bumper ends vs. the horizontal front ones. The '55 is a more cohesive, "pure" design.

@moe-parr - Barry, why did I know you would pick the '55.

I agree with Barry. I prefer the rear styling of the '55 but love both cars.
THIS IS A CLOSE ONE! The '55 was a knockout! But then for '56, the refinement of the "rear end fins" and "headlight brows" in the front, forces me to give the edge to the '56.
For what my opinion is worth, likely less than two-cents in todays inflationary world, 1956 was a banner year for the Big Three automakers for beautiful styling.
When I look at Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln, each pulls me to them. Then I look at GM's line-up from Chevy to Cadillac, and my socks are just knocked off with their beauty. And Chrysler Corp. was no exception, as Chrysler and DeSoto just oozed with style, and Plymouth and Dodge too.
Yup, a banner year!

The '56 but this is as close to a tie as I've seen.
'56 for the better looking rear view and the 12 volt electrical system.
55 because of it's better looking rear end and cleaner overall appearance.
Strictly on looks, I go for the 1955. For everyday use, I'd like the 1956 12 volt system.
Got to go with the leader, so it's the '55 for me.
