Gotta love GM of the '70s...The '77 Pontiac Bonneville had a Chevrolet Chevette transmission, that's Chevette, NOT Corvette. Ask me how I know.

Tony, I had a '77 Bonneville, bought it new and the trans when after a short time. A class action suit got me a few bucks, not enough to change my attitude towards GM. Since I'm a forever Corvette nut I have to make exceptions when to comes to boycotting GM products.

Did you switch out the transmission? So long ago but now I DO remember the Chevette trans in that big machine. A big GM DUH!

No, they just replaced it with another Chevette trans. The replacement lasted until I sold the car years later. The car was used by the Mrs. as a grocery getter, so not many miles went on it.

@sizedoesmatter Years ago I owned a low-miler '85 Z-28 Camaro, which was a very nice driving car, but I began to notice a minor "howl" coming from the rear end.  I checked around and was told by several car people that GM used the same rear end for the Camaro as they had used for the Chevy Vega.  I never confirmed this with 100% certainty but given many other similar horror stories abounding at the time, I decided to sell it and move on.  Most of my cars have been Japanese in the past 20 plus years.
