I love the quirky 59 Impala. The Ford was a step down from the beautiful 57 IMO.

Another magnifique comparo John! (You Da MAN!)

I owned and loved my 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 - in black and white. (Coupe version with no skirts) The '58 and '59 cars were nice but not nearly as nice as the '57 as Bob so rightly points out. The '59 Impala set the standard, that year for "OMG-fins" and it gets my vote.

I always liked the '59 Ford, and it gets my vote.

The only question was when I saw todays "Which One?" was how fast can I type CHEVROLET.  It's low, sleek, and a car you noticed when it was coming at you or driving in front of you.  The Ford on the other hand was big, boxy and bloated looking.

Ford for me here. My family had the 1959 Chevrolet. Not a good experience and I never liked that rear end. Sorry!

TIE though they are styling opposites, for what they are they are each good.

In '59 I would have bought;

5474 sun 1959 dodge royal lancer conv 118 1 AZ  79223
5474 sun 1959 dodge royal lancer conv 118 3 AZ DET  59467

I don't care for either, but I gave my nod to the Chevy.  I would have gone with what Brush posted.

I can't put my finger on anything specific but for whatever reason, the '59 Ford is a car that I have just never liked. I do however like the Chevy, so it's an easy decision for me today!

Love them both.... but nod to Chevrolet ONLY because of Ford's reverse hood - yes, yes... I know it's a "safety thing,"  but I just never liked it.

These two cars couldn't be more different in styling.  I really like the look of both of them but generally I tend to gravitate more to a squarer design (exceptions are the '65 Impala and Pontiac), so I give the nod to the Ford by a nose.  I owned a '59 Meteor (Canadian Ford....pics below) which was the same car with minor trim changes, and loved it so nostalgia plays a part in my choice as well.

Pretty nice. I've never seen a CAN '59 Ford before; I like it (nice colors too ).   As I noted, it's because of that pesky-reverse hood that my vote went to Chevy.   I too love classic, square-ish "3 box"  designs.

As you may know, FoMoCo designers desperately tried to re-work 1959 Fords, some ideas were nixed at the last minute.   To everyone's surprise, however, '59 Fords sold much better than MNGMT expected.

@chris Actually I didn't know of Ford having last minute design angst.

The Ford line you are familiar with was of course available in Canada plus the similar Meteor, which was distributed to Mercury dealers.  It was often referred to  back in the day as a Mercury Meteor.  The Meteor was first made in 1949 using the full size Ford body through to 1961.  It was then downsized to the midsize Fairlane body for '62-'63, but changed to share the full size Mercury body until its end in 1976.  It was priced a bit cheaper than the Merc.

I agree.  And I'd add also a step down from the nicer looking '58.
