1964. My very first brand new car purchase - GTO. Silver blue. So for that reason, I voted '64. In succession: '65, '66 and '67.
Wow....I absolutely love them all and the preference separation is extremely close. The order of the first two could change by noon...lol....but here goes:
1965, '66, '64, '67.
Tony, I'm guessing it was a 4-speed with TRI-Power?1964. My very first brand new car purchase - GTO. Silver blue. So for that reason, I voted '64. In succession: '65, '66 and '67.

I'm partial to the 1965. 1966 and 1967 tie for second.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
Thank you for doing this comparison, John. For years I preferred the 1965 over the others. Recently I found the more curved lines of 1966, slightly more appealing. I love them all!
in order though: 1966, 1967, 1965 and finally that fine 1964. You cannot lose here.
@sizedoesmatter Thanks for this post John, a topic near and dear to me.The ‘65 you have pictured is just like the one I had right down to the color. I’m with David about the styling, over the years I gradually came to appreciate the Coke bottle ‘66, although I never changed my mind on the color. The louvered taillight treatment is amazing!
‘66,’65,’64,’67
PS I don’t remember if I posted this before, kind of a funny side note. My buddy owned a ‘66 Goat, and had it about a year or so. He and I were washing it one day when I noticed something pretty funny. Between the awesome taillights was spelled out in individual chrome letters P-O-N-I-T-A-C. It was defiantly factory, and no one had ever noticed up to then, too cool to correct!
@kevins Glad you like post. The lettering says a lot about the '60s GM quality control.

I always thought it was a bit strange that Pontiac took the beautiful '66 GTO taillights and used them on the '67 Firebird ('68-9 as well) and '67 Grand Prix. The '67 Firebird looked awesome with them (I owned one and loved it) but given how GM car trim styling generally changed year to year back then, I thought this was not exactly exciting styling innovation. I do concede that the lenses duplicated on these cars weren't 100% identical but at a glance they looked the same. Strangely enough, the only minor detractor for me about the '67 GTO is that the tail lights in the different shaped deck surround present as less stylish than all previous GTOs. The '66 tail end was awesome looking. Just one man's opinion.
Love the '66, '67, '65; don't care for the '64 or any of them after the '67.
@brush I LOVED the '64 thru '67 GTOs....very much liked the '68 thru '72 but was totally turned off by the '73. Same for the similar bodied Chevelle and Olds.
@jack-dodds I thought the louvered taillights on the ‘66 were unique because you couldn’t barely see the lenses in the daytime. The problems for me with the ‘67 were the added chrome, especially with the rocker’s, and the absence of “tri-power”. For all the naysayers that think the quad was better, heck, even us Ohio hillbilliy’s know that vacuum sucks. We got us some mechanical linkage and a block-off plate, and shucks, six barrels rule!
My choice would complete different, with a reversal of the order, 67, 66, 65, then the 64.
