Weird. This was a tough one, yet it wasn't. My first observation is the same as its always been with regard to the Fifties Imperials, that being, they appear to be "overdone" Chryslers. Now aside from this, I break today's "Which One?" down like this.
I for sure DON'T like the fully-open rear wheel wells. And this applies on any car! And then the "tacked on" looking taillights. So that means I like the '56 just a little bit better with the lessor fully-open rear wheel wells.
But the '56 seems to be more "over-chromed" for my taste, however more tasteful looking than the '55. So I "voted" for the '56, but really could go with a "Tie" saying I don't like either. Give me a Chrysler in either year, and I'd be happier.

They are both excellent '50's Imperials, with an elegant stance and ample V-8 power. Right now, I have a diecast replica of the 1955 edition of the Imperial.
I love both, but the '56 is my all time favorite Imperial. Man, I'd sure wish we'd gotten one in 1:24.😟
I love them both but prefer the tail end styling of the '55.
The '56 for me; a more concise and thorough styling exercise overall, than the '55.
I like the 56. The lines look a bit smoother than the 55. Compared to Cadillac and Lincoln they both look smoother and more modern. I can see where they were moving toward the shape of the 57. The shape of the rear window on both is really nice. The rear lights on imperial through the 50s have always been a bit out there and space age. I can accept them.
1956. The fins make the car complete, and the straight side spear looks sleeker.

Not because I own one, I have always thought the 55 was a better proportioned car. As the pictures show, the rear overhang of the 56 makes it look too long and I have never been a fan of fins. The full radiused rear wheel openings of the 55 also appeal to me.
I like both but the ‘55 a lot more so that’s my choice.
A tie for me. I find them a little too large but somewhat attractive.
Tie for me. They were both outstanding designs.
56 for me please. Just like the back end better.
