The longer nose, eyelids and two tone paint makes the 56 a winner.
Great-looking American automobiles from that great mid-Fifties era ! I have several replicas of these cars in either 1/64, 1/43 or 1/18 scale.
The fifty-four's styling is intentional, direct and gimic-free, The fifty-six, while nice and more in tune with its year, is just a touch too much for my taste. Fifty-four please john!
54 by the closest of margins. The dashboard made the difference.

I like the 56. It may be overdressed but the 54 is way way to plain.
I echo the words of both Mr. Jackman and Mr. Perrone, and along with their reasons for choosing the '54, I'll add that the taillights deliver the knockout punch for me. '54 for the win!

The Mercury outshined its Pontiac and Dodge competitors in 1954 - I wouldn't say the same for the '56, so the '54 gets my vote.

The two best looking Mercury s ever made. The '56 handles better at 100+ mph, spent many hours riding in both cars back in the early '60's. Jerry had both a '54 & then a '56 and Bill had a '53 and Rick had a '56. My sister had a '55. Beautiful cars, loved them all. Extremely close but I'll vote for the '56.
1954 for me. I have always found it to be a comfortable unpretentious design.
Going with the cleaner '54 but I like the '56 too.
Gents, thanks for your responses.

@perrone1 I agree with Tony's comments.....it's the '54 by a nose for me. I prefer the less adorned/flashy '55 Mercury to the '56.
