HIGH marks, John, on this head scratcher sir! I owned a brand new 64 so there went my vote. But after initially balking at the horizontal lights that they suddenly switched to vertical and the other blatant changes they made to my beloved Goat - I about went ballistic! Years and years later, I must admit that the 65 looks better. But loyalty to the first Pontiac GTO makes me vote original.
1965 for me. It looks better in my opinion.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
I too went with the 65, but it was not until the 66 that I liked the GTO.
Don't care for the '64, Like a lot the '65, love the '66, '67 is very good, just don't like '68 up.
Horizontal or verticals, I like them both. Is it just style or does one light up the road better than the other?
Another very difficult decision....well done John! For me it boils down to which one do I LOVE most; I would be very pleased to own any GTO in the '64 thru '67 era. I think I will go with the '65 today, simply because Pontiac in this era was symbolized by the stacked headlights, which IMHO suit it so well. The GTO was a terrific car from '64 to '72; after that "not so much".

- 1964 GTO:
- Quarter-mile time: 13.29 seconds
- Quarter-mile time: 13.29 seconds
- 1965 GTO (with 389 Tri-Power):
- Quarter-mile time: 14.5 seconds
- Trap speed: 100 mph (161 kph)
- 0-60 mph: 5.8 seconds
- Top speed: 114 mph (182.4 kph) at 6,000 rpm
- Quarter-mile time: 14.5 seconds
The 64 is important for being the first Pontiac to hold the name GTO. The 65 moved the GTO into the publics eye and pushed the performance image to the masses. In 66 and 67, every division of GM, except Cadillac, was focusing performance in their intermediate sized cars along with body styles that were beautiful from every division. In this case, I vote for the 65 as the first step in this beautification process.
Love both but it's the '64 that gets my vote. It's the car that started a new era. It may appear unassuming but it's a force to be reckoned with.
Gents, thanks for your responses.
