Definitely a win for Pontiac. The Mercury styling isn't unattractive in its own right but to my eye always suffered by trying to look like a "cheapened" Lincoln Continental.

Thanks for another interesting comparison John. These cars are so very different in styling yet both I find very appealing. I love the '65 square styling that Fomoco introduced, which was a refreshing wholesale change from previous years. GM also did a significant change but went in a different direction altogether, with a beautifully flowing, sculptured look. Both companies offered traditional and stacked headlight design which wisely addressed various customer tastes. In this Mercury vs. Pontiac comparison I give the nod to the stunning Pontiac. If it was Ford Galaxie vs. Impala it would be Ford by a nose.

I couldn't type PONTIAC fast enough! OMG, '65 was an ugly styling year for Mercury! The square look just does nothing for me. While the PONTIAC is styling personified. A gorgeous year for PONTIAC!

I'm a big fan of fender skirts, however I felt the Catalina 2+2 takes on a more sporty flair without then. Save the more formal look with skirts for the GP and the Bonneville.

Which is why they make a terrific accessory. I dislike the interruption in the swage line, and would rather a smaller car than the Bonneville. It's two different looks in one car!
Of course it's all in my dreams anyway 😉
