Oh man; how difficult this is John! Love both. The 53 is way more modern and up to date, visually. The 51 is a more recognizable icon to most 'car guys'. If I can only have one, I'd rather be seen cruisin' in the 51, thank you!
1953. It's sleek and it's bittersweet orange.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
The sportier and more nimble 53 for me John.
I have to go with a TIE. Both, along with the '49 and '54 are, in my opinion, are the most beautiful Mercury's ever offered by Ford. The '55 and '56 would be contenders and then the next one would be the '60. After that, no interest in Mercury until the Cougar debuted in '67.

The '53 wins this one easily for me. It is my favorite Mercury of its decade but there are several other years of that decade that are close contenders ( '52 and '54 to '56). I like the '51 Mercury but much prefer the '49 grille and tail end treatment of that 3 year styling era. Merc styling tanked big time '57 thru '59 IMHO.
I had the pleasure of riding around in 2 '51's, they were tanks, slow and leaned over in the corners, just big old tanks. And a lot of cruising in a '53 which was better handling and faster and I think looked better.
Me on the ground under Bill's '53, Bill on his Triumph 650, My '48 Dodge in the back ground. He was 17 and I was 15. Memories!
Mercury: love the '54, '55, '56, '61, '64
No question, the '53 is adorable but today I prefer the old school charm of the '51.
Gents, thanks for your responses.
